What is a Legs, Bums and Tums class?

Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced fitness enthusiast, a Legs Bums and Tums (LBT) class, like the ones we run here at PureGym, is suitable for all fitness levels. This class is usually around 30 minutes to an hour long and is designed to tone your legs, glutes and abs, help you get fitter, and improve athleticism. Training your core and lower body is a great way to improve muscle tone and maintain good balance and stability.

Set to a playlist of motivating tunes, you’ll be working on a variety of core and leg exercises throughout the whole workout. LBT focuses on your lower body so you’ll work on a combination of exercises targeting your legs, stomach, and glutes.

What are the benefits of a Legs, Bums and Tums class?

The great thing about joining a fitness class like Legs, Bums and Tums is that you’ll be training in a supportive environment with fellow members and a qualified fitness instructor. If you’re new to the gym and not sure where to start, it can be particularly helpful, as you can learn how to perform exercises with the guidance of a PT. The workout is also planned out for you which removes some of the stress of hitting the gym.

Some of the health benefits you can expect to enjoy from LBT classes include:

  • Improved muscle tone in the legs, glutes, and stomach

  • Stronger legs and glutes

  • Core strength

  • Increased stability and balance

  • Increased stamina and endurance

  • Improved sports performance

What type of exercises will I do in a LBT class?

Each personal trainer will have their own workout routine but here’s an example of what a Legs, Bums and Tums class might look like:

  • The Warm-Up

All classes will start with a warm up to help prepare your body for the workout by increasing your heart rate and warming up the muscles. This will get your body ready for exercises that require a little more effort and can could last anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes depending on the length of the class.

Here are some examples of warm -up exercises:

    • Jogging on the spot
    • High Knees
    • Heel Flicks
    • Jumping Jacks
  • Main workout

Many LBT classes follow a Tabata- style workout which means that you'll be working for 20 seconds at a high intensity, then taking a 10 second rest. You can learn more about Tabata workouts and their benefits here

LBT classes can use a combination of bodyweight exercises and exercises with weights. The weights are prepared before the workout so there’s no need to faff around getting equipment in-between your sets. For the example LBT workout below, I’ve only included no equipment exercises.

    1st round:

    2nd round:

    • Run stance squats
    • Lying in-outs

    3rd round:

    • Lunge jumps
    • Mason twists

    4th round

    5th round

    • Speed skaters
    • Froggers
  • The Cool Down

    • Hamstring Stretch
    • Glute stretch
    • Cat stretch
    • Quad stretch

The class will vary depending on who is teaching it but will always follow a similar format to the above. If there are any exercises you can’t do or need a progression or regression of, speak to the instructor who will be able to help you find an alternative. You should also inform your instructor of any injuries as they can offer safe exercises.

A LBT class is an aerobic exercise, which means it is a form of cardio. These classes will help to improve your fitness and endurance by increasing your heart rate, and can improve the health of your heart and cardiovascular system. As many of the exercises are a form of resistance training, you’ll also see improvements to the strength of your muscles, so it’s an excellent all-rounder workout.

Can you do a Legs, Bums and Tums workout when pregnant?

Generally, you can continue most forms of exercise in the early stages of pregnancy, but make sure to listen to your body and stop if and when you start to feel uncomfortable. Most importantly, let your trainer know ahead of the class, so they can let you know if there are any replacement exercises you should do instead.

Do you need a mat for LBT?

Most LBT classes will include some form of floor work to target your abs, so you may feel more comfortable on a mat. However plenty of gyms, including PureGym, have mats available for use.

Most kinds of exercise will help to boost your flexibility and mobility by lengthening the muscles and keeping the joints healthy, however LBT focuses more on toning and endurance. If your goal is to improve flexibility, you may be better off signing up for a yoga or Pilates class instead. You can learn more about the differences between yoga and Pilates here
